On 9 July, 2009, the UN General Assembly officially endorsed by consensus the outcome of the World Conference on the Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development (New York, 24 to 26 June, 2009). This Outcome Document thereby paves the way for the follow-up of this historic conference, which acknowledges the challenge faced by Member States to ensure that actions and responses to the crisis are commensurate with its scale, depth and urgency, adequately financed, promptly implemented and appropriately coordinated internationally.

While discussions about economic “green shoots” continue unabated in the US, in many countries, and especially in the developing world, matters are getting worse. The downturn in the US began with a failure in the financial system, which quickly was translated into a slowdown in the real economy. But, in the developing world, it is just the opposite: a decline in exports, reduced remittances, lower foreign direct investment and precipitous falls in capital flows have led to economic weakening. Jul 2, 2009, By Aldo Caliari - The most successful of the conferences does not guarantee a successful implementation and that is why, though the conference just concluded, the real job only begins. This year alone more than 53 million people are joining the rank of the poor and 50 million are expected to lose their jobs worldwide. Knowing that even the swiftest implementation of these measures will not happen fast enough for them, should be the context for the actions to follow. See full text.

June 27, 2009 - The outcome document of the UN Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development was formally adopted by member states at yesterday’s final session amidst a sober climate in the General Assembly. Overall, the text opens up possibilities but genuine reforms were not secured. The central role of the United Nations, or the G192, in economic governance nearly vanished! Today, at the closing of the UN Conference on the Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development, governments will adopt an outcome document reflecting months of negotiations. The following analysis looks at 7 key issues that civil society deems crucial for the success of the conference. Although some progress was made on a few issues, the overwhelming majority of outcomes falls far below what is necessary to provide developing countries with the resources and tools they need to deal with the crisis.

Objective for the day: to provide opportunity for assessment of the UN Conference and follow-up opportunities in the broader political context, continuing work on key issues vis a vis the G8/G20, the BWIs and other bodies, sharing strategies and arriving at agreements for collaboration.
June 26, 2009 (Part 1: Morning version) After months of negotiations, the United Nations Conference on the Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development closes today, June 26th, 2009. Civil society organizations are seriously disappointed in the result of the Conference and the official outcome document. In no way do the results of the Conference measure up to the actions needed to address the scale and depth of the economic meltdown, most evident in the jobs crisis, particularly in developing countries.
